Veterans Treatment Court - Vet Court
The Berks County Probation & Parole Veterans Treatment Court program uses an evidence-based approach combining intensive judicial supervision, mandatory drug testing, treatment, and incentives to help veterans participating in the programs with substance abuse problems and mental health issues.
Like with traditional treatment court, the team is led by dedicated judge, prosecutors, defense counsel, treatment providers, veteran mentors, and a probation officer who work together to support and monitor a participant's recovery. The Vet Court team's goal is to honor the services of the veteran participants, reduce recidivism among participants, improve community relations and restore the participants lives with pro-social and health-conscious opportunities.
Mission Statement:
To divert veterans and those currently serving in the military from the traditional criminal justice system while providing them with comprehensive rehabilitative services that address substance abuse, mental health, or adjustment issues that have occurred n t correlation with their military service.

How to apply
Veterans who wish to be considered for Vet Court participation can complete an application with the Clerk of Courts.
Eligibility
- Must be a Berks County Resident
- Must be a current of former member of any branch of the military including National Guard and Reserves.
- Discharge status will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Dishonorable discharge is an automatic disqualifier.
- Diagnostic Criteria - substance use disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, serious mental illness, military sexual trauma, or traumatic brain injury.
- Any misdemeanor or felony will be considered except for - Homicide or registerable sex offenses.
Veteran Mentor Program
Veteran Mentors are an integral and unique component of the Veterans Treatment Court program, as veterans share common values and experiences in both combat and in the often-difficult transition into civilian life.
Veteran Mentors are veterans of the armed services who volunteer their time to assist participants in Veterans Treatment Court. They are an invaluable resource to the court and its participants. They provide advice, personal experiences, and guidance. Veteran Mentors are valuable allies through what can be a very challenging time.
